1990 - The Department of Physical Education and Sports was founded
1995 - The Department became the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, being accredited in 1997

International academic cooperation programmes:

The Faculty of Physical Education and Sports cooperates with similar institutions in Europe, being a member of international organizations, such as the Danube countries, Eastern European countries and of European Union. These agreements were promoted by the Sports Science Council, in which the Faculty plays an active role through its teaching staff. The teaching staff participates in Erasmus mobility programmes, and the students at Occupational Therapy are involved in Leonardo da Vinci programmes. Students constantly attend international sports competitions, such as the Bogazici Student Festival - University of Istanbul, the Student Festival -ESSEC Paris, the World University Championships and Olympic Games. The Faculty of Physical Education and Sports will include a new master programme (International Master Programme in Sports Tourism Engineering) starting from September 2010. The programme falls within the ERASMUS framework. The academic consortium includes 6 well-known European universities: University of Health and Law Lille 2, France (coordinator), Instituto Superior Da Maia, Porto, Portugal, University of Thessaly, Greece, “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, Iasi, Romania, University of Craiova, Romania, Charles University of Prague, Czech Republic and a non-European university, i.e. University of Balamand, Lebanon. Students will attend the 1st semester courses at Lille, the 2nd semester courses at Maia, and the 3rd and 4th semester courses at the other partner universities.
