The intensive course of Romanian as a foreign language aims at a rapid and efficient acquisition of the basic structures of the Romanian language, which will enable students to communicate between them as well as with the native speakers of Romanian with whom they interact directly since they study and live in a Romanian linguistic environment.

Moreover, the incoming students should accurately understand and produce the scientific information that they have acquired during their specialization courses.

The teaching and scientific activity of the Department of Applied Modern Languages, focusing on the teaching of Romanian as a foreign language, was founded in the academic year 1972-1973, when the first foreign students came to study at the University of Craiova.

The current structure of the department was established following the University Senate Decision in 1998. On the one hand, the teaching staff comprises university teachers of Romanian for General Purposes to foreign students - and, on the other hand, university teachers of English, French, German and Spanish for Special Purposes.

The department also runs an INTERLINGUA course of Romanian, and a certificate of language proficiency is awarded upon the successful completion the course.

Incoming ERASMUS students at the University of Craiova may enrol and attend Romanian language courses during the entire academic year, and are free of charge. At the end of their study programme, students shall sit in for an examination in Romanian, being awarded with 5 ECTS credits.
